THE IDEA OF LIGHT

2022

Tasked with designing a lamp, I was bound to a singular parameter: the lightbulb must be precisely 2 feet from the table. Inspired by Plato's Allegory of the Cave where one can see the light and shadows without knowing their source, I envisioned a sculptural piece that challenged the conventional notion of illumination through concealing its light source.

Steel, Lightbulb

My concept materialized as a colossal, oversized cube that one could toss like dice. Regardless of which side it landed on, the lightbulb's profile remained unseen when viewed from a 90-degree angle. This design compelled viewers to shift their perspective and seek out the elusive source of light, mirroring the way Plato's allegory encourages us to question the reality of our perceptions and delve deeper into unseen truths.
