White Oak, Walnut, Glass
100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE
2022
My initial venture into fusing Magical Realism with furniture design stemmed from a unique challenge: creating a dedicated reading space for a single book. Immediately, I gravitated towards Gabriel García Márquez's 1967 masterpiece, "100 Years of Solitude.” In Latin America, this book holds such significance that it's often likened to our literary bible.
I envisioned the chair as a throne for the reader, cradling them as a tangible bridge to the world of García Márquez. Much like how church windows depict biblical scenes, the central stained-glass panel summarizes my visual interpretation of “100 Years of Solitude.” The heart of the chair features a prominent knot, a reminder of its origins as a living tree. The sturdiness of the wood, juxtaposed with the fragility of the glass and the emptiness of the side frames, all act as portals to the fantastical realm of Magical Realism.
